Role details
Lead the retail technology function as interim Head of Technology, for one of Australia's largest energy retailers, covering a team of up to 26 people across Southbank Melbourne.
This is a short 4 month engagement, that could convert to a full time role
Paying $1,100 - $1,250 per day initially.
You'll own end-to-end technology leadership across Capability Management, DevSecOps, Test and Release Management, and Service Management for the B2C retail business. Day-to-day that means setting delivery cadence, managing vendor performance, driving platform stability, and translating business priorities into well-shaped backlogs ready for PI planning.
The team operates on a SAFe/Agile delivery model with ITIL service management underpinning how incidents, problems and changes are handled. You'll work across internal squads and strategic technology partners, so your week will mix internal coaching with external vendor governance. The tech environment spans CI/CD pipelines, automated test suites, observability tooling and security-by-design controls baked into delivery pipelines.
You'll have genuine authority here. Three to six direct reports and up to twenty indirect, with a mandate to uplift ways of working rather than just maintain them. The role sits inside a large, well-resourced organisation, which means proper budget cycles, established architecture and security governance, and a General Manager who owns the business line. That structure also means some decisions move through more layers than they would at a smaller company, so you'll need to be comfortable working within enterprise governance while still pushing for continuous improvement.
What You'll Do
- Set the operating rhythm for Retail Digital, running PI planning, backlog health, showcases and stakeholder triage forums across the value stream.
- Lead DevSecOps teams and vendors to deliver secure, stable platforms, holding partners accountable to SLAs, KPIs and remediation plans.
- Define and own test strategy covering automated regression, integration, performance and security testing, plus release governance and hypercare coordination.
- Coach and develop leaders across capability, delivery, testing and service management, building clear accountability and a continuous improvement culture.
What You'll Need
- Demonstrated leadership across digital services, platform operations or DevSecOps in a complex, customer-facing environment.
- Hands-on working knowledge of SAFe/Agile delivery and ITIL service management, with experience lifting teams and vendors toward both frameworks.
- Proven vendor management in outsourced models, including commercial governance, SLA management and performance improvement.
- Experience with CI/CD environments, automated test strategy, and release governance that balances speed with risk-based controls.
