Role details

Own the cloud cost function for a large government-backed organisation running AWS and Azure across registration and licensing services for millions of Victorians.

You'll monitor and optimise cloud spend across AWS and Azure, build dashboards that track usage and cost trends, and work directly with engineering and finance teams to set budgets, run forecasts, and keep allocations accurate. You'll also automate reporting and alerts using Python or Shell scripting, and make sure billing data feeds cleanly into financial systems.

The role is based out of Melbourne CBD with genuine work-from-home flexibility. You'll be using tools like AWS Cost Explorer, Azure Cost Management, and CloudHealth day-to-day. There's an out-of-hours roster component, so it's worth knowing that upfront. In return, you get a stable, well-resourced environment with a real mandate to shape how cloud costs are governed.

This is a role where you'll have genuine influence over financial decisions at a meaningful scale. The organisation invests in its people, including professional development and cert support. You'll sit at the intersection of engineering and finance, which means your work is visible to senior leadership and your recommendations actually get acted on. Baseline security clearance is required, so you'll need to be an Australian citizen or permanent resident eligible for that process.

What You'll Do

  • Monitor and optimise cloud expenditure across AWS and Azure, building dashboards to track spend, usage, and trends for finance and engineering audiences.
  • Implement FinOps practices covering budgeting, cost visibility, chargebacks, and variance analysis to keep financial reporting accurate.
  • Automate cost reporting, alerts, and optimisation workflows using Python or Shell scripting and cloud-native APIs.
  • Establish and enforce cloud governance policies covering resource provisioning, decommissioning, and compliance with security and budget standards.

What You'll Need

  • 3+ years in cloud financial operations or infrastructure management, with hands-on experience across AWS and/or Azure.
  • Proficiency with cost management tooling including AWS Cost Explorer, Azure Cost Management, and CloudHealth.
  • Ability to translate cloud billing and usage data into clear financial reporting for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • FinOps certification is desirable, as is experience with Terraform, CloudFormation, or scripting in Python or Shell.

About the Company

They operate registration and licensing services on behalf of the Victorian State Government, in partnership with major Australian superannuation and asset management groups. It's a large-scale, compliance-driven environment serving millions of Victorians, with a technology division focused on modernising how those services are delivered.
